Afghanistan head into the Ireland vs Afghanistan 3rd ODI with confidence after securing direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. In the second ODI, Afghanistan posted 299 for 8 in a rain-affected 47-over innings. Ireland struggled during the chase and were eventually dismissed for 207, giving Afghanistan a convincing victory. Rashid Khan played a major role in the result, taking six wickets and putting the Irish batting order under sustained pressure.
The result also confirmed Afghanistan’s place in the 2027 World Cup, meaning the third ODI will not carry the same qualification pressure for the visitors. Nevertheless, Afghanistan will want to maintain their momentum and move closer to winning the series.
Ireland now face an important opportunity to respond. The hosts were unable to complete the first ODI because of rain and then suffered a heavy defeat in the second match. Consequently, they will need a much-improved performance with both bat and ball if they want to challenge Afghanistan in Belfast.
Paul Stirling, Harry Tector and the rest of Ireland’s experienced batting lineup will be expected to provide greater stability. Ireland’s bowlers must also find a way to contain Afghanistan’s powerful batting order and avoid another collapse in the middle overs.
For Afghanistan, Rashid Khan remains one of the biggest threats. His six-wicket haul in the previous game demonstrated how quickly the match can turn when Afghanistan’s spinners find the right conditions.
The move to Stormont could also give Ireland a fresh opportunity. However, Afghanistan arrive with confidence, having already taken control of the series and secured their World Cup place.
